Your Money is Safe at Our Credit Union
The closing of IndyMac Bank and the resulting media reports about FDIC coverage are raising questions about credit union insurance coverage in Missouri.
Show Me Credit Union wants to assure you that your money is safe in a credit union. Since 1970, credit unions have been federally insured through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), an arm of the National Credit Union Administration. The U.S. government backs this fund with full faith and credit just as it does the FDIC. NCUSIF provides the same amount of coverage for credit unions as the FDIC does for banks: up to $100,000 per depositor and additional coverage of up to $250,000 per depositor for other types of accounts, such as IRAs.
For more information about your account’s coverage, contact your credit union or see the NCUA’s insurance estimator at: http://webapps.ncua.gov/ins/

ATM Security
Misleading stories have been circulated over the Internet and through other sources in reference to entering your PIN backwards at an ATM terminal to signal distress or dangerous situation, such as kidnapping or robbery. These stories are false. Entering a reversed PIN does not send a distress signal through the ATM network. If you would like information on ATM safety tips, please visit the Publications and Industry News section of CardAlert Fraud Manager located at the Internet link below.

The Fair Credit Reporting (FACT) Act
The FACT act was signed into law in December, 2003 to provide changes to consumers concerning identity theft, accuracy of consumer reports and the receipt of marketing solicitations. Two requirements of this act that you should be aware of is that we may report information about your account to credit bureaus. Late or missed payments or other defaults on your account may be reflected in your credit report. To help prevent against identity theft, you may be asked for additional information when requesting a change of address on your accounts or credit cards. Contact the credit union for further details.
Effective March 1, 2005 you will be able to request one free credit report per year so that you can see where your credit stands. To access, go Online to www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228 for information.
Identity Theft Help
Contact the credit union at any time for assistance in avoiding identity theft, or if you feel that you are a victim. The credit union's data processor, Fiserv, also offers a consumer credit monitoring program called AlertMe to which you can subscribe with Fiserv for a monthle fee. This service monitors your credit report daily and if any suspect activity is noticed, Fiserv staff will notify you and help you with resolution of any problems.
Please note that the incidence of identity theft, especially by an Internet scam called phishing, is on the rise. Phishers usually operate in one of two manners--by email, where the message makes you believe that something is wrong and the phisher will ask for your personal information (such as account, social security and/or credit/debit card numbers or passwords/PINs) and claim that if you don't give it, your services may be interrupted; and by a fake website that looks almost identical to websites you may have used in the past. To verify that the website you are visiting is valid, look for the locked padlock icon on the bottom of your browser screen. If the padlock is not there, the site is not a trusted, secured site. Never enter personal information on a non-secure site or give out personal information via email or telephone.
Show Me Credit Union and the National Credit Union Association will never ask you for personal information via email or Internet. If you are contacted via telephone by someone claiming to be with the credit union, ask him/her for contact information and call him/her back on the phone numbers you have for the credit union to verify that you are really talking with the credit union before you discuss your account. Please let us know if you have any questions or if you feel you have been victimized by a phishing scam. The Missouri Attorney General's office is also very helpful with cases of phishing.
